The surgeon makes an incision at the base of the nipple, then releases and elevates the fibrous tissue and milk ducts, or makes an incision through the center of the nipple to cut away the fibrous tissue or milk ducts causing the retraction.
Note: The surgeon will try to preserve the milk ducts so that breastfeeding may be possible in the future. This depends on the degree of retraction of the patient’s inverted nipple.
