Protruding Ear Correction Surgery
Correction of protruding ears: Normally, a person’s ears lie close to the back of the head, at an angle of about 25–35 degrees. The outer edge of the ear folds slightly backward and is about 1.5–2 centimeters from the scalp. Protruding ears are an abnormality in which the angle between the ear and the head is wider than normal, resulting in an unattractive ear shape. Surgery can correct protruding ears by making an incision along the back of the ear to reshape and suture the cartilage, or by removing a portion of the ear causing the problem to achieve the desired shape. The procedure can be performed from around age 6, when the ears have reached adult size.
Surgical Procedure
1. Local anesthetic is injected.
2. The doctor marks the incision line and makes an incision behind the ear (the advantage of placing the incision behind the ear is that the scar will be hidden and not visible once healed).
3. A section of skin is removed, and the skin along the incision is brought together.
4. The ear cartilage is reshaped and sutured into the desired shape, and the skin incision is closed.
3. The surgery takes about 45–60 minutes. You can go home immediately afterward.
Postoperative Care
1. If you experience heavy bleeding or significant swelling, you may see the doctor before your scheduled appointment.
2. Swelling of the ears generally improves within 2–4 weeks. You should wear a headband to hold the ears against your head for 2–3 weeks.
3. The doctor will schedule a follow-up appointment in about one week.
4. Stitches are usually removed after about 5–7 days.
5. Avoid alcohol and smoking for about one week.
